When I first saw that photo my first reaction was – What a waste of resources… But then I clicked on the photo and saw that this was for New York City.
I have only had the pleasure of riding in NYC once. I rented a bike off the park near 111 St., rode west to the Hudson river bikeway, then down to Battery Park / Wall street / Twin Towers site and then across the Brooklyn Bridge & back.
While riding on the street, I was amazed by hyper traffic which made flowing with the traffic pretty easy. That is - except for the number of trucks and cars that just stop and double park on all the streets! It was a definite obstacle course.
I can see where this could make sense in NYC for a few major cycle arteries.
BTW – I noticed that 2 people were killed in NYC on Thursday 10/18/2007:
