More good local (but not to us) activism

LCC will be organising 5 ‘Bike tubes' bicycle rides into central London, to support Londoners commuting into work on the first morning of the tube strike Wednesday 10th June.

We are calling for all LCC members and cyclists to join one of these led rides in central London or even lead their own! The more of a cycling presence we can create the more we can show how easy it is to get on your bike. Here's how you can help.

If you are available to join one of the following Bike tubes, or set up one of your own, please email matthew@lcc.org.uk to see how you can get involved

Since I'm only a casual bike rider and reader of this blog, I may have missed something. And please correct me if I have...

But what's stopping us from doing something similar on our own?

This blog is very informative, but for the casual bike rider, aka the person who only rides when the weather is Perfect and we don't have 50 million other things to do, you guys are serious professionals to our fledgling status. Those bike lane folks often have rides in Oak Cliff. What's stopping us from having a relaxing bike ride/meet and greet/educate those of us who are new event from time to time?? And we can take the education into our own hands instead of waiting for the govt to pay for programs.

I know I saw that there was one big city wide event with DART, but one event is just one event. Maybe smaller, more personal neighborhood efforts are needed.

Dear Maggie ~:),
(And I mean "dear" in an affectionate way) We are far from serious most of the time!

I will admit however, we have made cycling comfortable to our tastes in a mostly trial and error way that makes us discount having any pretensions of superiority over "fledgling cyclists".

We are just a bit further down a similar road you are on! One great thing about cycling is that it's joyous freedom is easily accessible to nearly everyone, and it has many variations and forms. I like speeding along on my carbon fiber road bike, PM prefers a more upright and sedate pace. (But he is old! He's been around since the earth cooled, I think.)

I am glad you are attracted to CycleSmartDallas and I pray we can be as encouraging to all "casual" cyclists as a tailwind is to me.

Maggie, I got introduced to vehicular cycling-lite by riding with the late Gene Carr's Saturday Morning Ride. Mr. Carr was a retired engineer who passed away several years ago in his early 90s. He was a great, urban cyclist, and it was he who introduced me to the (then) alien concept of not riding in the gutter.

The Greater Dallas Bicyclists still hold this ride, and I highly recommend it.

A rolling get together might be in order, but in the mean time...
