Just in time for Xmas 2009!

Hi-tech wicking-fabric performance T, retina-burning hi-viz color, head-exploding text: $25 each (+/-).

The graphic on the back is of a proposed version of the Cyclists May Use Full Lane sign from the new Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). The adopted version doesn't have the "change lanes to pass" blade.

These are not in the Cycle*Dallas store (in the right column, but other great items are), but will be available by special order. Let us know.

I have a variation of the sign on the back of our tandem. Originally it was exactly the same as on the shirts. People would walk nearby and read "Use Full Lane" and have no clue of the real meaning. I had my local vinyl cutter shrink the bike and put the word "Bikes" ahead of "Use" and the confusion was greatly reduced. Apparently reading is easier than thinking for some people!

I believe you have my original sign somewhere in the blog, but I've not taken a photo of the "new, improved" version.

Yes Fred, I do have your wonderful tandem pic here someplace, and you correctly point out a problem with the signage as originally proposed. It seems the approved, final version is clearer, but lacks the "change lanes to pass" message.

Are cars really required to change lanes when passing or just pass at "a safe distance"?

Sec. 545.053. PASSING TO THE LEFT; RETURN; BEING PASSED. (a) An operator passing another vehicle:

(1) shall pass to the left of the other vehicle at a safe distance; and

(2) may not move back to the right side of the roadway until safely clear of the passed vehicle.

(b) An operator being passed by another vehicle:

(1) shall, on audible signal, move or remain to the right in favor of the passing vehicle; and

(2) may not accelerate until completely passed by the passing vehicle.

(c) Subsection (b) does not apply when passing to the right is permitted.

Safe distance. That's one of the reasons that sign didn't make it out of committee (and I referred to it as "proposed"). So, that message is simply one you share with drivers, and if you are commanding/controlling your lane, overtaking vehicles will change lanes to pass you 99.999999% of the time (rough estimate).

Your rough estimate is way low.

There, I fixed it.

How many accidents are going to be caused by drivers trying to read that tiny type on the front? :-)

The laws regarding overtaking another vehicle will vary slightly from state to state. I don't know the specific wording of FL laws, but changing lanes to pass another vehicle makes more sense than an arbitrary figure, even a three-foot figure. Since FL laws support cyclists' use of the full lane, I object to a driver performing a pass without moving into the other lane.

For an example of a non-safe pass, please do a YouTube search for MustPassStrike (all one word).

Why not say "Please change lanes to pass" or "Pass with care" much more personable and kinder that commanding.

I agree, If you take you control your lane. The only time that people will not change lanes, is when the hit you (Which rarely happens, but does). I just like being nice in the signage on my back. My Pass with care shirt has 4 inch lettering.

Got a link? Or a pic? You can email it to me at "pmsummer at gmail dot com".

When I did the bumper stickers for TBC (that I also used a busboards on the sides of DART buses in Dallas), I used the phrase "Thank You For Sharing The Road With Bicyclists" for the same reason... friendliness.

The image I am using on this shirt is my preferred command, as too many motorists and cyclists alike believe that cyclists should hug the curd, and that a "safe"
passing distance is 3 feet (a distance far closer than a car will usually pass another car). The sign is an actual design proposed to the MUTCD, and I didn't want to alter it. As Fred pointed out, the language is a bit ambiguous.

People Power Santa Cruz had similar shirts last year, but without the wordiness on the front.
